In 1903 the Lower Belvedere opened as the Modern Gallery (Modernen Galerie), and in 1912 it was renamed the Austrian State Gallery (Österreichische Staatsgalerie). It showed Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. In 1918 the Upper Belvedere was reopened as part of the gallery.
