Yashica MG1

The Yashica MG-1 is a fixed lens 35mm rangefinder released in 1975. It features a fixed Yashinon 45/2.8 which focuses from about 1m to infinity and takes 55mm filters. The aperture priority exposure system is measured by a CdS meter above the lens. CdS metering requires batteries. Two LEDs on the top of the body indicate slow speed and over-exposure. The MG-1 was sold as a cheaper alternative.

I have both the MG-1 version and the Electro 35 GSN. More on that camera later. The Yashica MG-1 is a big 35mm film rangefinder. I consider it a poor person's Leica. Super cool camera. I picked the MG-1 up last year at the Irvington Flea Market in Indianapolis. I bought it for $20.

The GX and MG-1 were the last prosumer rangefinders that Yashica made before descending into cheapo point-and-shoot hell. I have the feeling the MG-1 was designed as a less expensive, smaller-aperture option to the GX. The MG-1 has a 45mm f/2.8 Yashinon lens instead of the 40mm f/1.7 found in the GX.

Feb 4, 2007. #9. just go for the electro gsn. you gain 1 1/3 stop over the the MG-1 with the faster lens. moreover, gsn looks much cooler than the MG-1. however, if you're thinking of attaching screw-on filters, MG-1 would be great as the light meter is within the lens barrel unlike the gsn which has it above, near the rangefinder mechanism.
