HMCS Bras d'Or. May 2, 2013 Bill Barry. The Bras d'Or was an auxiliary minesweeper completed at Sorel, MRC du Bas-Richelieu, Québec, in 1926 as a lightship. On the outbreak of war she patrolled the approaches to Halifax and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In October 1940, while shadowing a Romanian freighter, she disappeared without a trace.

HMCS Bras d'Or (FHE 400) was the second vessel to bear that name (see below) and was built at Marine Industries Limited (MIL) in Sorel, Quebec, the primary contractor being de Havilland Canada, an aircraft company. The ship was saved and donated to the Musée Maritime du Québec at L'Islet-sur-Mer, Quebec. Bellow are photos from my visit in.

The RCN became interested in the 1950s in hydrofoils, and a small trial vessel arrived in Halifax aboard HMCS BONAVENTURE in 1957. This led to the construction of HMCS BRAS d'OR, named after the location of the early tests. The diesel engine would drive the vessel up to 23 knots, when the hull would clear the water and the gas turbine would.
