Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral is a Gothic building built from 1248. It replaced a Romanesque cathedral on the same site that had itself been preceded by two other Christian shrines. His initial patronage was that of Saint Vital and Saint Agricol. Most of the current construction dates from the second half of the 13th century.

The cathedral is made out of the volcanic stone that is typical to the region. The interior is beautiful and you can even pay a small donation to climb the stairs (quite narrow and steep towards the top) to view the city from the roof.. We spent a few days in the Clermont-Ferrand area in June 2013 and spent part of one day in Clermont.
