The Clarence River catchment is on the far north coast of NSW, situated around the city of Grafton. The Great Dividing Range makes up the western boundary between Stanthorpe and Glen Innes, Baldblair, the Doughboy Ranges and the Dorrigo Plateau in the south make up the southern boundary, and the MacPherson Ranges make up the northern boundary.

The Clarence River estuary is located on the north coast of New South Wales. Rising in the Macpherson Ranges on the Queensland and New South Wales border, it is classed as a barrier river estuary with a permanently open, trained entrance between the townships of Iluka and Yamba. The Clarence River ( Māori: Waiau Toa; officially Waiau Toa / Clarence River) is a major river which flows through the Kaikōura Ranges in the northeast of New Zealand's South Island. At roughly 209 kilometres (130 mi) long, it is the longest river in Canterbury and the eighth longest in New Zealand.
